2017 Cultural Tourism Festivals at a Glance!
For 2017, the Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism has selected 41 representative Korean cultural and tourism festivals to be divided among four categories: 3 Premier Festivals, 7 Best Festivals, 10 Excellent Festivals, and 21 Up-and-coming Festivals. In addition to these, three former representative festivals: Boryeong Mud Festival, Andong Mask Dance Festival and Jinju Namgang Yudeung (Lantern) Festival have been chosen as Global Festivals, as they are expected to increase the awareness of Korean tourism in the international arena.
The festivals are selected based on the frequency of visits by international tourists in previous year. The three premier festivals are Gimje Horizon Festival, Mungyeong Traditional Tea Cup Festival and Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival. Boryeong Mud Festival LINK
【 Photo: Visitors having fun at the Boryeong Mud Festival 】The internationally recognized summer festival in Korea, Boryeong Mud Festival will be held at Daecheon Beach, the largest beach on the western coast of the nation. As the name of the festival suggests, the theme focuses on the use of mud with facilities including mud slides, a huge mud bath and many other mud-related programs that are put in place for all visitors to enjoy!

Andong Mask Dance Festival LINK
【 Photo: Performers wearing traditional Korean masks at the festival 】With the theme of tal (Korean traditional mask) and mask dancing, this is a unique cultural festival that has been introduced by many international broadcasting networks, including BBC and CNN. The festival provides the chance to watch mask dance performances from not only Korea but from other countries around the world, as well as learn some of the dances.

Jinju Yudeung Festival LINK
【 Photo: Jinju Yudeung Festival lights up the autumn night 】Jinju Yudeung Festival originates from the lighting of lanterns during the Jinjuseong Fortress Battle of the Imjin War (1592-1598). The lanterns were originally lit by people inside the fortress as a form of communication with their family members outside but were gradually seen as a form of honoring the men of merit who died during the war.

Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival LINK
Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival is a winter event that revolves around sancheoneo (Masou salmon), ice and snow. Every year, the festival draws about 1 million visitors and it is considered to be the nation’s largest and most popular winter festival as a variety of programs and fun activities are offered. The most popular programs include ice fishing, ice soccer, and ice sledding.

Mungyeong Traditional Tea Cup Festival LINK
【 Photo: Ceramics on display at Mungyeong Traditional Tea Cup Festival 】Mungyeong has long had a flourishing ceramics industry owing to an abundant supply of sandy soil and firewood. Mungyeong Traditional Tea Cup Festival offers visitors an opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation for the unassuming beauty of chasabal (traditional tea bowls). Tea and pottery-related hands-on programs are facilitated by local potters from the Mungyeong region.

Gimje Horizon Festival LINK
Gimje Horizon Festival offers visitors a chance to experience Korea's agriculture as well as various traditional cultural performances. The festival highlights the beautiful natural environment of Gimje and the rice produced in the region. The expansive fields of Gimje are fertile and offer suitable conditions for growing rice. Gimje is also the largest granary in Korea. During the festival period, visitors can experience catching grasshoppers, harvesting rice, maneuvering a cart and other exciting agricultural-related hands-on activities.

Jeju Fire Festival LINK
Early in the New Year according to the lunar calendar, one of the many hills on Jeju Island is set ablaze to wish for a plentiful harvest and good year. The festival originated from Jeju's traditional farming custom of burning rice fields and vegetable gardens in early spring to exterminate pests so that the cows can feed on healthy grasses, and ease cultivation.

Goryeong Daegaya Festival LINK
Goryeong Daegaya Festival introduces and promotes Daegaya, an ancient kingdom from around 1,500 years ago, known for its quality steel production. The festival presents a range of hands-on programs focusing on the region’s rich history and rural background. An exhibition of relics from the Daegaya era shows the life and wisdom of the Daegaya people.

Yeongam Wangin Cultural Festival LINK
Yeongam Wangin Cultural Festival takes place in April when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and it celebrates the achievements of Korea’s Dr. Wangin, who was known for his travel to Japan over 1,600 years ago to spread knowledge, culture, and art. This festival spans the area from Bongseondae to Sangdaepo History Park, creating a festive mood throughout the city for locals and tourists alike to enjoy.

Jindo Miracle Sea Parting Festival LINK

When the tide is low, a path between the mainland and a nearby island is revealed. Jindo Miracle Sea Parting Festival is held when the tide differences are at their peak, rendering a natural stage for the festival's great selection of events. The festival is already well-known among overseas travelers, and many visitors flock to the quiet town of Jindo-gun every year during the festival period.

Damyang Bamboo Festival LINK

Damyang Bamboo Festival hosts a variety of hands-on activities such as bamboo drawing, traditional fishing with a bamboo basket, bamboo craft making, and many more. Visitors can also sample alcoholic beverages brewed in bamboo stalks and try dishes made with bamboo shoots.

Daegu Yangnyeongsi Traditional Medicine Festival LINK
Yangnyeong-si in Daegu is known for its rich history and hanbang (traditional Korean medicine) culture. The festival has become a signature celebration that promotes traditional Korean medicine worldwide. Throughout the festival, visitors can learn the history of traditional Korean medicine and experience traditional medical treatments.

Boseong Green Tea Festival LINK

Ulsan Onggi Festival LINK

Gwangalli Fishing Village Festival LINK

The name of the festival comes from the local dialect for the community of fishermen, signaling the traditional nature of this festival. Miryang Arirang Festival LINK

Chuncheon International Mime Festival is a leading performing arts festival in Korea and its fame has now spread across the globe. Each year, renowned artists from home and abroad give outstanding live performances. On the weekends of the festival period, performances are held practically nonstop.

Buyeo Seodong Lotus Festival LINK
【 Photo: Korea’s first man-made pond, Gungnamji Pond 】Buyeo Seodong Lotus Festival is held around Gungnamji Pond, an artificial pond constructed during the reign of King Muwang of the Baekje Kingdom (18 BC–AD 660). A performance based on the love between Prince Seodong (King Muwang's name in his youth) and Princess Seonhwa is the highlight of the festival. Events during the festival include face painting, lotus leaf tea sampling, lotus flower soap making, lotus flower photo and painting exhibitions, and a variety of performances.

Pohang International Fire & Light Festival LINK

Jeongnamjin Jangheung Water Festival LINK

Held every summer, Jeongnamjin Jangheung Water Festival is a departure from other festivals, which mainly feature exhibitions and performances, as it highlights summer and water through a variety of games and hands-on programs. A huge artificial pool is installed on the Tamjingang River for various water activities. Visitors can also enjoy rafting, water bicycles, riding a rope ferry across the river, and other fun activities.

Bonghwa Sweetfish Festival LINK

Gangjin Celadon FestivalLINK

Pyeongchang Hyoseok Cultural FestivalLINK
Pyeongchang Hyoseok Cultural Festival takes place at Lee Hyo-seok Culture Village in Pyeongchang, the setting for Lee Hyo-seok's famous novel, "When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom." The festival highlights different locations depicted in the novel as well as the area's folklore. Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival LINK
The Songpa area in Seoul was the ancient capital of the Baekje Kingdom for 500 years during the Hanseong Baekje Era (18 BC-AD 475) around 2,000 years ago. Songpa is also home to a number of time-honored historic and cultural heritage sites, including Pungnaptoseong Fortress and Mongchontoseong Fortress. The festival offers visitors a glimpse into the ancient history and culture of the Hanseong Baekje Period that brilliantly flourished based on a strong national power.

Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival LINK

This festival aims to give visitors a feeling of nostalgia for food from the past through diverse hands-on food programs, surrounded by nature.

Daejeon Ppuri Park Festival LINK
Daejeon Ppuri Park Festival takes place in the area around Ppuri Park in Jung-gu, Daejeon, where filial piety has been highly respected. The festival features hands-on experience programs and events reflecting the traditional family culture and filial piety in Korea.

Anseong Namsadang Baudeogi FestivalLINK
【 Photo: Tightrope performance (Credit: Anseong Namsadang Baudeogi Festival Organizing Committee) 】Anseong Namsadang Baudeogi (Kim Am-deok, the only female leader in Korean Namsadang) Festival has been a preservation of the tradition of Namsadang (troupes of entertainers who traveled around the country). This festival covers more than a hundred performances at the old Anseong market, highlighting the richness of top three markets during the Joseon Dynasty. During the festival, visitors can look forward to parades, performances, hands-on activities, exhibitions and contests. Programs include a Baudeogi memorial ceremony and yards where visitors can directly experience traditional folk games, explore popular local delights of Anseong city and more.

Seosan Haemieupseong Festival LINK
Haemieupseong Festival takes place in the city of Seosan, a central city of history and culture along Korea's western coast. Haemieupseong Fortress is a great place to learn about Korea's historical past because of the many cultural heritage items that can be found at the site. The festival provides a wide array of cultural events and history-related programs.

Gangneung Coffee FestivalLINK
Gangneung Coffee Festival is located amid the mountains, rocks, beaches, and the many large and small coffee shops of Gangneung. The festival grounds are filled with the pleasant aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans. Visitors can enjoy a variety of programs, including both watching and tasting the creations of baristas from across the country, hands-on coffee experiences, musical performances, and purchasing coffee products.

Icheon Rice Festival LINK

Ganggyeong Fermented Seafood Festival LINK
The city of Ganggyeong produces half of all fermented seafood produced in the country. It is here that Ganggyeong Fermented Seafood Festival is held to offer visitors the chance to make and buy fresh fermented seafood. Additional activities include cooking programs with fermented seafood, crafting wish lanterns, and more hands-on activities.

Gwangju Donggu Chungjang Memory Festival LINK

A wide range of events take place during the festival period including a street parade by the locals, an exhibition reenacting the life of the 1970s and '80s, traditional games, local dish sampling, a folk song festival, intangible cultural heritage performances, and street performances.

Sunchang Jang Festival LINK
Sunchang, a village famous for its citizens’ longevity and for the production of jang (food paste), holds Sunchang Jang Festival every year. Sunchang gochujang (Korean chili paste) has recently been recognized for its excellent health benefits. As an island formed in the Bukhangang River, Jaraseom Island offers various attractions such as riverside promenades, sports facilities, and natural recreational forests. The jazz festival attracts over 100,000 visitors from home and abroad every year. Visitors to the festival can enjoy smooth jazz tunes and also get a chance to meet some of the world's leading jazz musicians.

Gochang Moyangseong Festival LINK
【 Photo: Moyangseong Fortress, built to protect against enemies during Joseon Dynasty 】Gochang Moyangseong Festival was created to honor the magnificence of the Moyangseong Fortress located in Gochang, Jeollanam-do. The fortress, now called Gochangeupseong Fortress, was built by the region’s citizens in order to defend against enemies during the Joseon dynasty. It is believed that walking on the fortress can grant a long and healthy life and thus many visitors can be seen at the fortress every year. Other programs available include dapseongdori (event where one carries a rock on top of one’s head around the fortress three times for blessings), a Joseon Dynasty military ceremony and traditional cultural hands-on activities.

Jeongseon Arirang Festival LINK
【 Photo: Performance at Jeongseon Arirang Festival (Credit: Jeongseon Arirang Festival Organizing Committee) 】Jeongseon Arirang Festival is held every October with the aim to preserve and promote Jeongseon Arirang, a regional intangible cultural asset. During the festival period, visitors will be able to watch performances of not only Jeongseon Arirang but also arirang from other regions in Korea and overseas. The festival will include events, experience programs, and exhibitions. In particular, the performance “Ttetmok Arirang” is not to be missed, showing both the sadness and joy found within this classic Korean folk song.
